Mixed-Use Italian Market Development Plans Presented

According to the Passyunk Post, developers presented plans for a mixed-use project at the Passyunk Square Civic Association meeting on Tuesday.

Midwood Investment and Development presented plans for a 5-story building that will consist of 18,000 square feet of commercial space, 70 apartments, 8 single-family trinities and an underground parking lot that will hold around 150 cars.  This development will grace the vacant lot of 9th Street and Washington Avenue.  The planned building will need to replicate and blend with the existing historic Italian Market buildings.

The apartments are planned to consist of one and two bedroom units, while 8 new trinity-style homes will face the Darien Street side of the project to blend with the existing homes on that block.

The project will take an estimated 18 months for completion. It is unknown as to when development will begin.

 

Gardening Tips for City Living

City living does not necessarily mean gardening is factored out.  Plenty of city residents utilize their outdoor space with beautiful plants and flowers. Urban Gardening Know How produced a helpful list of tips to help tackle urban gardening for city residents.

According to their site, city dwellers can easily grow vegetable gardens containing peppers, lettuce, carrots, cucumbers and tomatoes.  Adequate drainage is a main requirement for a successful outdoor veggie garden. If you are working with a small outdoor space, consider using hanging baskets.

Another alternative to city gardening is utilizing roof top or balcony space. Roof top gardens are becoming more popular in urban settings.  The plants absorb rainfall, which in turn reduces runoff. Before creating a roof-top space, make sure the roof is stable enough to hold the weight of the plants.  Also, utilizing vacant lots are a great way to create garden space and brighten a neighborhood.

 

Spring Fair in Fitler Square

Next weekend, May 8th and 9th, the Fitler Square Improvement Association is holding its Annual Spring Fair.  Admission is free and the event is family friendly with plenty activities for kids. The events begin on Friday at 10 am.

Around the perimeter of the square, outside vendors rent space for a vibrant flea market.

Activities for children on Saturday include a moon bounce and face painting surrounded by music performed by local bands and a cappella youth groups.

Booths and tables are staffed by friends, volunteers and board members, who are on hand to answer questions about the park, FSIA and membership.

Rittenhouse Row Spring Festival Next Weekend

On Saturday, May 2nd the Rittenhouse Row Spring Festival will take place on Walnut Street between Broad Street and Rittenhouse Square.  The festival begins at noon and will feature cuisine from Center City area restaurants that include 500 Degrees, a. Bar, a. Kitchen, Alma de Cuba, Applebees, Avance, Barclay Prime, Butcher and Singer, Capital One 360 Café, Cavanaugh’s Rittenhouse and Continental Mid-town just to name a few.

According to PhillyMag.com, there will be a fashion show, live music, cocktail lounges and beauty bars. Don’t miss out!

 

Navy Yard Looking to Add Residential Housing

According to Philly.com, the Navy Yard is looking to add residential rentals to a 1.5 million square foot space.  The Philadelphia Industrial Development Corp is working to begin development in the next year or so, if approved. Ultimately, the goal is to attractive young, working professionals to the Navy Yard residences.  Over the years, the business district in the Navy Yard has boomed housing several companies including Urban Outfitters, GlaxoSmithKline and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.  To increase the growing development, the PIDC would also like to invest more accessible transportation to the Navy Yard.  Currently, shuttles are provided for employees.  SEPTA is researching on a possible Broad Street Line expansion.

As for the possibility of residential rentals, the PIDC is looking to initially develop 1,000 to 1,500 units.  Hopefully at some point in the near future, the Navy Yard will become the new up and coming neighborhood of Philadelphia.

East Passyunk Gateway Project Breaks Ground Tomorrow

According to the Passyunk Post, the East Passyunk gateway project will have a ceremonial ground breaking event tomorrow. In January of 2014, renderings of the project were released. The project was delayed due to budgeting issues.

The Broad and McKean Streets location will be transformed into a space with seating and tables, improved lighting and landscaping. The original plans for a fountain have been scrapped.  This intersection is planned to be brighten significantly with lighting, which will draw even more visitors to the Avenue. The lighting will be colorful and create an eye-catching ambiance.

The Passyunk Avenue Revitalization Corporation plans to have the project finished by June.  This will give local residents and visitors an opportunity to enjoy the new space at the start of the summer months.

Over the last few years, East Passyunk Avenue has transformed into one of the most popular areas in the city with award-winning restaurants and thriving businesses. On any given Friday or Saturday night, the Avenue is packed with visitors enjoying the wide array of bars and restaurants.

Philly Ranked 4th Most Walkable City

PhillyMag.com reported that Philadelphia is the fourth most walkable city in the United States according to Walk Score.  Many sections of the city have been categorized as the most walkable neighborhoods in the country including Bella Vista and Northern Liberties.

The study conducted by Walk Score , a company that produces stats on walkability in cities across the country, explained the rankings are based on walking routes, proximity to shopping, parks, entertainment, etc. Young people prefer to live in walkable areas that provide easy access to grocery stores and coffee shops right in the area.  This walkability ranking has potential to drive more young Millennials to Philadelphia due to its accessibility and convenience.
