According to the Passyunk Post, apartment plans have been proposed for the lot located at 827-29 Wharton Street, across the street from Pat’s King of Steaks. Passyunk Square resident and developer, Paul Mirabello, recently purchased the property and plans to construct a four-story building with over 6,000 square feet of commercial space and 21 apartments.
Preliminary plans were presented at a zoning meeting for the Passyunk Square Civic Association, reported the Passyunk Post. There was not an overwhelming amount of opposition from the surrounding neighbors. The only concerns that arose involved the height of the structure and parking. Some suggested single family homes instead but the developer, Mirabello, insisted that apartments are a better fit for this particular lot.
The Passyunk Post also reported that Mirabello will not proceed with development until he has full support from the neighborhood. Maria Olivieri, former owner of 827-29 Wharton Street, is a member of the family that owns Pat’s Steaks.
The 8,000 square foot lot is located in a great area for redevelopment with the Italian Market and Passyunk Square in walking distance. Currently, there are murals next to the lot of famous, local entertainers like Bobby Rydell and Frankie Avalon.
